a note from kylie
As a mum — and the producer of Kids Unplugged — I know how hard it can feel raising kids in a world where screens are everywhere. We don’t need more fear or guilt around technology — we need encouragement, positive role models, and hopeful alternatives.
Kids Unplugged is born from our own experience. Our eldest was born in 2010 — the same year as the smartphone and iPad. As we navigated this new world of parenting, we chose to give our three boys a life where they could feel the difference between screens and fresh air and adventure. Now they choose an unplugged life for themselves. And in filming, we found other great kids who do too…
We create this series to inspire tamariki and whānau to rediscover the joy of real-world adventure, connection, creativity, and time together.
We know the science backs us: time offline, time in nature, and shared experiences support children’s wellbeing, confidence, resilience, and connection. Instead of focusing on fear or screen harm, Kids Unplugged focuses on possibility — the joy, confidence, creativity, and memories that grow when kids are given the chance to explore the real world.
