family toolkit: Wild Kai with Te Tai

Kids Unplugged cooks up a feast.

Te Tai takes us out to collect wild kai; gathering from the land – wallaby stew and personally picked pūhā and pikopiko.

Let’s Ponder & Pātai Together

  • Play: Te Tai shares lots of cool bush skills and knowledge. What are some real-world skills you’d like to learn?

  • Discover: Spending time with whānau and tūpuna helped Te Tai learn many things. What have you learned from your parents, grandparents or elders?

  • Unplug: Taking a break from screens helped Te Tai notice changes in herself. What changes do you notice in yourself when you unplug?

Play mode

  • Te Tai loves wild kai like puha, pikopiko and boilups. What foods or recipes are special to your family?

  • In what ways have you helped grow, gather or prepare food? What’s your favourite part?

discover mode

  • Te Tai takes on real responsibilities outdoors as a kaitiaki. Why do responsibilities help people grow?

  • What is something you feel proud of learning?

  • Research together about native animals or plants that are special to New Zealand and find out more about what happens when pests damage their environment.

unplug mode

  • How is learning outdoors different from learning through a screen?

  • What can you see, hear, feel, and experience outdoors that you can’t experience on a screen?

I love being connected to my whenua, my tipuna, iwi. I have an important role to fill in the future to show my generation what I have learnt along the way.

As an hunter and gatherer, you have more of an appreciation from where you get your kai from.
